  • Bordeaux Behavaran

Mode of Action

  • Bordeaux works through the slow release of copper ions (Cu²⁺) from the copper sulfate–calcium hydroxide complex deposited on the plant surface. These copper ions are passively absorbed by fungal and bacterial spores and cells, where they bind to and denature proteins, disrupting key enzymes in respiratory and metabolic pathways and damaging cell membranes.
  • Because the copper film must contact spores before infection, Bordeaux acts as a purely protective fungicide and bactericide with multi‑site activity, preventing spore germination and penetration rather than curing established infections.

Uses

  • Used for control of shot‑hole disease in apricot. This is a protective fungicide and bactericide from the group of inorganic copper compounds containing copper sulfate and calcium hydroxide. Its mode of action is through passive uptake of copper ions, which then disrupt fungal enzyme systems.
  • In other countries it is used to control a wide range of diseases such as potato late blight, fire blight of pome fruit trees, and various canker diseases. The pre‑harvest interval is 7 days. One important use of Bordeaux is reduction of ice crystal formation, which lowers the risk of frost damage. The best spray program on fruit trees for disease control is four Bordeaux applications in autumn, winter, and spring.

  • Wear protective clothing, chemical‑resistant gloves, goggles, and a mask during mixing and spraying to avoid skin, eye, and inhalation exposure to copper‑containing spray.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling the product; wash hands, face, and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after work.
  • Avoid spraying during full bloom to reduce the risk of flower burn and potential fruit drop on sensitive cultivars.
  • Do not apply in strong wind or just before heavy rain to minimize drift and wash‑off; ensure thorough coverage of branches and buds for effective protection.
  • Respect a minimum 7‑day pre‑harvest interval on all treated fruit trees and avoid excessive number of applications to limit copper accumulation on foliage and soil.
  • Do not mix with highly acidic or very alkaline products, mineral oils, or phosphonate fertilizers unless compatibility has been confirmed on a small scale.
  • Store in original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well‑ventilated place away from food, feed, children, and animals.
  • In case of contact with eyes or skin, rinse immediately with plenty of clean water; if swallowed or if symptoms occur, seek medical advice and show the product label.

  • Copper‑based products are toxic to aquatic organisms; prevent contamination of ponds, streams, canals, and fish farms by avoiding disposal of tank washings and leftover spray into water bodies.
  • Repeated use may lead to copper buildup in soil, potentially affecting soil microorganisms and earthworms; follow recommended doses and avoid unnecessary applications.
  • Use as part of an integrated disease management program, combining pruning, sanitation, and resistant cultivars to reduce reliance on copper sprays.
  • Maintain buffer zones near surface waters and avoid spraying on very saturated soils to reduce runoff risk.
  • Collect and dispose of empty containers and waste according to local regulations; do not burn or bury containers near wells, waterways, or irrigation channels.
