Fenitrothion is an older yet effective organophosphate insecticide widely used for controlling agricultural and public health pests. Despite its high efficacy, due to its environmental risks and toxicity to humans and beneficial organisms, it should be used with caution and within the framework of Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

  • Fenitrothion is a non-systemic insecticide with contact and stomach action, effective against:
  • Wheat and cereal bugs, locusts, cereal aphids-Rice stem borers-Nematospora vector bugs in pistachio-Pistachio shoot beetles-Eggplant and alfalfa locusts, Asian sugarcane locusts

Mode of Action

  • Like other organophosphates, fenitrothion inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the insect nervous system. This inhibition leads to accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve synapses, causing continuous nerve stimulation, paralysis, and death.
  • Contact action: Penetrates the insect cuticle and disrupts the nervous system.
  • Stomach action: Ingested through feeding on treated leaves or fruits, causing poisoning.
  • Fumigant action: In hot and enclosed conditions, vapors can affect insects.

Applications

Fenitrothion is flammable and primarily used in Iran for:

  • Controlling Nematospora vector bugs and pistachio shoot borers
  • Managing Asian locusts in sugarcane, vegetables, alfalfa, and wheat fields
  • Controlling aphids and bugs in wheat

Internationally, it is also used for:

  • Controlling ants in food storage and livestock barns
  • Bed bugs in homes
  • Various beetles, cockroaches, crickets, fleas, and poultry and livestock flies

It should not be used in grain storage. If used with additives like Cytobot, application rates may be reduced by up to 50%. No pre-harvest interval (PHI) has been registered.

Application Guidelines:

  • Spray during cool hours (morning or evening).
  • Avoid harvesting for up to 3 days after application.
Product Pests Consumption rate
