Non-systemic Insecticide and Miticide with Ovicidal and Contact Herbicidal Effects

Mode of Action

  • Emulsifiable Volck oil (Petroleum oils) is used to control aphids, scale insects, mites, and their eggs, as well as some diseases of fruit trees. This pesticide covers the respiratory and vital pores on the surface of insects and their eggs, preventing them from breathing and causing the pest’s death.

Applications

It is used against the following pests:

  • Wavy scale, pistachio trunk scale, date palm clear scale, mealybug, and tea red short-legged mite

  • Black scale, olive purple scale, temperate fruit tree scale, white scale on non-bearing trees and ornamental plants

  • Oriental yellow mite, mollusks, red mite, armored scales, and citrus wax scales

  • The best time to use this oil to control various mites, scales, aphids, etc., and to protect various fruit trees is one week before budding under normal temperature conditions.
  • To use emulsifiable oil, first dilute it with water and then spray it on all parts of the plants and trees as a foliar application to ensure complete coverage.
  • Volck oil enhances the effects of pesticides and is miscible with most insecticides and fungicides. Additionally, adding Volck oil to pesticides during spraying increases the adhesion of the pesticides to the surface and prevents them from being washed away by rain. Another application of Volck oil is its use alongside vegetable oils such as soybean oil to prevent early bud break and protect against late winter or early spring frost damage.

Technical Specifications

  • The purity of emulsifiable oils is indicated by their sulfonation degree. For example, a sulfonation degree of 100 indicates that the pesticide is composed of 100% saturated hydrocarbons. As the sulfonation degree decreases, the amount of unsaturated hydrocarbons increases.
  • Emulsifiable oils are made from paraffin and have different sulfonation degrees:
  • Oils with high sulfonation degrees (85-95) are used for summer spraying

  • Oils with sulfonation degrees of 65-80 are used for winter spraying

Special Applications for Pistachio Orchards

  1. The concentration of Volck oil as a pesticide is 1 to 1.5 percent. However, using Volck oil at concentrations higher than 3 percent combined with potassium nitrate in foliar application during February (Bahman month) increases the concentration of potassium ions in pistachio flower buds, helping to facilitate flowering and improve fruit and flower quality.
  2. In years when the number of days with temperatures between 0-7°C in pistachio-growing regions is insufficient and the chilling requirement of pistachio trees has not been met, after evaluating the number of days with temperatures between 0-7°C, Volck oil can be used in mid to late February (Bahman month) to help fulfill the chilling requirement and support the development of flower and vegetative buds.
  3. For using Volck oil to meet the chilling requirement of pistachio trees, 66% of the chilling requirement must have been naturally fulfilled in the region. Therefore, by using meteorological models such as the Utah model and calculating the number of days when the chilling requirement has been met, Volck oil can be applied at the appropriate time.
  4. The concentration of Volck oil for meeting the chilling requirement is 40% for the Akbari pistachio cultivar and 30% for cultivars such as Ahmad Aghaei or Kaleh Ghoochi.
  5. In areas with sweet water and soil: 40 per 1000 for the Akbari cultivar and 30 per 1000 for other cultivars is recommended.
  6. In areas with saline water and soil: 50 per 1000 for the Akbari cultivar and 40 per 1000 for other cultivars is recommended.
  7. Volck or emulsifiable oils with over 90% purity are suitable for this application.

Important Precautions

  • The interval between the last oil application and harvest is 3 to 4 weeks.

  • Never use without mixing with water.

  • The interval between spraying with sulfur-based pesticides and emulsifiable oil is one month.
