Clothodim 24% is a systemic and selective herbicide for the control of broadleaf weeds in crops. By inhibiting the synthesis of fatty acids, it stops the growth and death of weeds. Important points for use, precautions, and prevention of resistance to this herbicide are compiled in this article.

  • Clothodim is a selective and systemic herbicide from the DIM herbicides (cyclohexanediones) family that is used to control narrow-leaved weeds (cereals) in broadleaf crop fields.
How it works
  • It is absorbed through the leaves and transported to the weed plant and transferred to the meristems. By inhibiting the ACCase enzyme, it stops the production of fatty acids and thus prevents cell growth. First, weed growth stops, and then yellowing, necrosis and death occur. The first symptoms are seen 3–7 days after spraying. Uses In target weeds (narrow-leaved): Echinochloa spp., wild oats, foxtails, Phalaris, rye, sedge (perennial), chicken and other wheat grasses, edible crops, soybeans, rapeseed, sugar beets, sunflowers, cotton, potatoes, legumes, vegetables, summer vegetables, orchards in non-fruiting years (with caution), in cereals (wheat, barley, corn) should not be used because it causes severe damage.
  • Best time to use: 3–5 leaf stage of weeds Be sure to use with adjuvant oil (0.5–1 liter per hectare). There should be no rain for 6–8 hours after spraying.
  • Clothodim lasts in the soil for about 4 weeks, so observing crop rotation is especially important for the wheat family.
  • Due to its low solubility in water, this herbicide moves slowly in the plant and symptoms appear late.
  • Rapid absorption and transfer to the root organs ensures effective control of perennial weeds.
  • A humid environment increases the effect of the poison, and dry conditions reduce its effectiveness.

  • The use of a mask, gloves, goggles and protective clothing is mandatory.
  • Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes. Avoid eating, drinking or smoking while working.
  • Do not use at temperatures above 35 degrees or below 10 degrees. Avoid blowing the solution into adjacent fields.
  • Do not mix with hormonal herbicides (2,4-D) without checking the mixing.
  • The soil should have sufficient moisture at the time of spraying to optimize the absorption and effect of Clothodim.
  • Avoid mixing Clothodim with the herbicide Bentazone. Avoid preparing the herbicide solution with salty or muddy water.
  • It is essential to comply with the recommended dosage; underuse will cause resistance and overuse will cause poisoning.
  • To prevent resistance in weeds, alternating use with other herbicides is recommended.

  • Low to moderate risk to bees; spray in the evening or at the time of flowering of crops.
  • Moderately toxic to aquatic life: prevent solution from reaching surface waters.
  • Moderately persistent in soil and decomposed by microorganisms. Avoid rinsing the spray tank in streams or ponds.
  • Empty containers should be rinsed three times, then punctured and disposed of in a standard manner
